Feature Member Ride – Robert Class

1996 Z28 Camaro

Robert Class has been with the Northstar Camaro Club for four years. It all started when he was looking for a Camaro on-line. He had no specific reason other than he wanted a Camaro no matter what year. We can all relate to that urge. Robert finally found one and it happened to belong to another club member Chad Peters who sparked interest not only in the Camaro but also about the Northstar Camaro Club. Way to go Chad! So Robert bought the 1996 Z28 Camaro and joined our club during that year's Car Craft Summer Nationals in St. Paul. The original Camaro was a stock Z28. Not being satisfied with stock (what true motor head really is), Robert decided to go with the Super Sport package to make his new 1996 Camaro more unique. He was looking for one from the factory, but the package was hard to get one that was clean. It took Robert a few years to get where he wanted the Camaro but it is finally done. Overall he likes his 1996 Camaro and it is a lot of fun to drive. He has received a couple of awards so far:  2010 - First Place and 2009 - Third Place. He says that the car shows have been a good experience. His future project is to go back to TPIS to increase his engine's displacement to a 396. He has seen the work that TPIS does and he is impressed with their results. His goal is to start racing more at Grove Creek Dragways instead of going just to car shows. Robert wants to thank Jim Hall, Clay Witt, and the rest of the crew at TPIS, Inc. for making his Camaro project so much fun and a good educational experience. He hopes to see Northstar Camaro club members in future club events.

An Inside Look at Nitrous Oxide

This indepth article was published in Chevy High Performance magazine in Feb 2007 titled The Big Squezze. When installed properly, a nitrous kit can provide an easy and economic way to raise the power level of any engine. Nitrous Oxide releases extra oxygen during combustion and enables more fuel to be burned. Kits start as low as $400.

Nitrous Works Top 10 Tips

  • Never attach the power leads of a 12-volt nitrous bottle heater directly to a battery. Always use a 12-volt power supply that is active only when the ignition switch is in the run position, therby making it a fail-safe installation.
  • A nitrous bottle at 85 degrees F is at about 1,000 psi. So only leave the nitrous bottle valve open when you are using it. Leaving the valve open for long periods can potentially damage nitrous solenoid seals.
  • Never assume that fuel pressure at idle and wide-open throttle (WOT) are the same. Always check the fuel pressure at WOT and under load
  • Always opt for Teflon paste, rather than Teflon tape, on any plumbing threads in a nitrous system. A loose piece of tape could obstruct a solenoid or jet orifice.
  • Never activiate the nitrous system without having the engine running. Doing so may cause an explosion during engine starting.
  • Always follow the manufacturer's jetting and fuel presssure recommendations as a starting point when installing and tuning a nitrous system.
  • Use a WOT switch to avoid activiating the system at idle or too low of an rpm, which could cause a nitrous backfire.
  • Always use filters prior to the solenoids.
  • Make sure that the fuel system has adequate supply, pressure, and volume to handle the requirements of the newly installed kit.
  • Solder any wire splices or connections, and make sure you have a solid ground connection.

Nitrous Express Q&A

  • How much nitrous can an engine take without having to worry about damage? Most modern-day engines can safely add up to 20 hp per cylinder.
  • What is the ideal compression ratio for nitrous usage in a competitive engine? Years of experience have taught us that 13-14:1 is a very good place to be.
  • What bottle pressure will produce maximum performance? All of our systems are calibrated for 1,050 psi; any pressure below this will produce an overrich condition, which decreases power; any pressure over 1,070 can cause a similar overrich condition.
  • What fuel pressure do you recommend for peak performance? Fuel pressure in itself does not affect nitrous system performance.

NOS/Holley Q&A

  • Will nitrous oxide hurt my engine? Not directly. If you are realistic in the engine's construction and choose the right nitrous kit, engine dependability is excellent.
  • How much bottle pressure should I use? We recommend 900-925 psi as a baseline.
  • How much should I change the jetting of my carburetor? We advise not to rejet your carburetors.
  • How long will a bottle last? A general guideline is that when a 125 hp system is sprayed for 12 seconds, a 10-pound bottle will last 7-10 full runs.
  • What is the most common system NOS offers? The NOS Cheater Plate System, PN 02001NOS, which sells for $476 and is available through summitracing.com. The system is adjustable from 150 to 250 hp and is upgradeable to a dual-stage system and into a Big Shot system.

WD-40 2010 Camaro for SEMA Cares Charity

This special project was specifically for SEMA’s charity program called “SEMA Cares”. The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS/RS project’s proceeds will be donated to the “Childhelp” organization which provides service for neglected and abused children. The second arm of this benefit will go to “Victory Junction Gang Camp” which provides a life-altering camping experience for disabled and chronically ill children that teaches these children life lessons and a new outlook on life to increase confidence and morale.

The spotlight of the 2010 Camaro features our new highly anticipated DE3S. The DE3S that is being equipped on this vehicle will feature a Satin Black finish with Yellow lips and a Red pin stripe. To showoff the versatility of our products, we are also incorporating our “Center-Lock” conversion which is a single center-locking hub with a Red finish on the hex nut. The Camaro will also go on tour at select west coast automotive related events and will be auctioned off at the end of the tour at Barrett-Jackson’s Classic Car Show and Auction on January 18-24 in Scottsdale, Arizona. We may be track-junkies, but we also care about our community and the involvement of these types of charities for the less fortunate. Please be sure to show your support for this great cause and all the participating organizations and come to SEMA’s booth at this years show!

  New 'Sunglass' Tail Light Design

This is one person's rendering of a new Camaro 'Sunglass' Tail Light design seen on a pre-production 2011 Camaro convertable. This was reported on Camaro5.com from CamaroScotty. Will this be for the 2011 Convertable, 2012 Z28, or some other package code order in the near future? The actual tail light had LED lighting with an After Burner lighting effect. Sure looks cool!

   2012 Camaro Z28 with 6.2L Supercharged V8

As reported on Camaro5.com web site:  'This Camaro Z28 was captured out testing with several other Camaros, as well as a Mustang GT500 (for comparison of course).

Seen prominently, even with the front covering is a much lower front fascia with large intakes. You can make out the shape despite the covering and it resembles the latest Transformers 3 Bumblebee Camaro front fascia. The hood cowl also looks to be more prominent than on standard Camaro.

The wheels are 20" SP550 anodized black - 20x10 front and 20x11 rears. Wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. The brake calipers very much resemble those from the CTS-V.

Quad exhaust (dual pipes per side) are at the rear, and the photographer described the sound from this car as "nothing short of unholy!" Best part is, GM was courteous enough to tape the engine specs on the dash: 6.2L supercharged V8, with Auto Transmission.'

2011 Camaro production started June 7th with 24,772 built so far; 2010 Camaro production orders are now finished. Highlights of the 2011 features:

  • new HP rating of 312 horsepowers on the V6 (3.6L SIDI V6)
  • Synergy Green will be offered on ALL models for a limited time
  • Heads-up-display (HUD) will be offered as standard equipment on the 2LT and 2SS models

Latest News:  The 6 Gen Camaro will be built on an Alpha platform. Also CNNMoney.com voted the V6 Camaro a Top 7 great road trip car.  Yahoo Autos has just named the 2010 Camaro SS one of the Fastest Cars available for under $50K.

The latest Camaro production and delivery (sales) #’s were released today and the 2011 Camaro has retaken the sales lead over the 2011 Mustang with its latest sales figures, selling 6,321 Camaros to 5,570 Mustangs! May, June, and July saw higher Mustang sales numbers and Camaros, owing in part to the heavy discounts/incentives on the 2010 Mustangs being cleared off dealer lots for the 2011 model years. The Camaro has now outsold the Mustang in 12 of the last 15 months.

According to Automotive News, GM will be building 20,000 convertables. However, GM has also pushed out the production out until the later half of 2011 model year. Additionally, the convertable top will be built by a Canadian company called Magna. The tops will be built in Bowling Green, Kentucky with fabric from Mexico. Here is an updated 2011 Convertible order/release schedule which was reported on Camaro5.com.

September brings a special overnight trip to Warrod, MN to see a museum of rare muscle cars. Be sure to check our schedule for the exact date. Our August Summer Classic Car Show at South Surburbon Cheverolet was a huge success with over 140 cars! Thanks to everyone who participated and to those that helped in any way.

It is our plan to continue to update this newsletter by the first day of every new month with categories such as Tip of the Month, Product of the Month, and Camaro News. We may have different categories in different months. For example, these categories may be featured from time to time:  Junk Yard Find, Tech Tip, Featured Drive In, etc.

Our main focus is on the Feature Member Ride which we will attempt to upate every other month. That way the feature ride stays on-line for two months. We randomly select six members each year to feature their Camaro in this e-newsletter.

But to make this e-newsletter really take off we need articles from you the members, especially TECH articles. So if you have any suggestions or feedback please send an e-mail to sgtatarms@northstarcamaroclub.com.

We hope that you continue to enjoy this new feature of our great club website!
